How to 3D Print Crisp Small Text & Embossed Tags Without Blobs

Workshop Notes • Typography & Slicing Benchmarks • Updated Fall 2026

Printing small names, serial numbers, or phone tags on keychains is notoriously frustrating. You slice a clean 3D font, but when the print finishes, letters like 'e', 'a', and 'o' are completely filled with melted plastic blobs, and dot-islands on lowercase 'i' tear off the bed.

A standard 0.40 mm nozzle is essentially a hot glue gun tracing paths. If your text stroke width is smaller than the extruded bead diameter, your slicer is forced to make aggressive compromises. Here is how to achieve clean typography without switching to a tiny 0.20 mm nozzle.

Want pre-scaled, manifold text geometry? You can type your text, preview live extrusion depths, and export ready-to-print STLs instantly with our Keychain Tag Generator.

1. The Arachne Engine: Your Secret Weapon

Older slicer algorithms used classic constant line widths (e.g., rigid 0.45 mm paths). When encountering thin serifs or sharp character corners, they would leave hollow gaps or omit entire strokes.

Always enable the Arachne Perimeter Generator in PrusaSlicer, Bambu Studio, or OrcaSlicer:

2. Embossed vs Debossed: Choose the Right Face

How you orient typography determines how clean it looks:

3. Retraction and Temperature Tuning

Because printing text requires hundreds of rapid retractions between tiny letter perimeters, thermal oozing is your worst enemy:

  1. Drop Nozzle Temp by 5°C: Running slightly cooler increases filament viscosity, cutting down the micro-strings that drag across letter gaps.
  2. Enable Z-Hop on Travel: Set Z-hop to 0.2 mm - 0.4 mm. When the hot nozzle jumps between letters, a tiny vertical lift prevents it from knocking over fragile, freestanding strokes.
  3. Slow Down Outer Walls: Drop your small perimeter / outer wall speed to 25 - 30 mm/s. Sharp text corners need extra cooling time to set without rounding off.

4. Font Geometry Rules

Fine-serif script fonts look great in 2D graphic design, but fail miserably in extrusion printing. Bold, sans-serif typefaces (like Arial Black, Impact, or bold Grotesque fonts) provide the necessary stroke mass so plastic lines bond securely to the underlying base plate.

Summary

Turn on Arachne perimeter generation, slow down outer wall speed to 25 mm/s, add a subtle Z-hop, and use bold sans-serif text. You can configure balanced keychain dimensions and export clean STLs directly on the STLKit3D Generator Hub.
