Single-Extruder Dual-Color 3D Printing Guide
Learn how to produce high-contrast, multi-color badges and keychains without an expensive multi-material unit.
Step 1: Determine Your Separation Layer
Using the STLKit3D Color-Swap Calculator, find the exact Z-height where your base plate stops and raised geometry begins (typically 2.6 mm to 3.0 mm).
Step 2: Add Pause in Your Slicer
- Slice your model with your standard profile (0.20 mm recommended).
- Move the layer preview vertical slider to the target swap layer.
- Right-click the plus (+) icon on the layer slider:
- PrusaSlicer / SuperSlicer: Select "Add color change (M600)".
- Bambu Studio / OrcaSlicer: Select "Pause".
- Cura: Use Extensions > Post Processing > Modify G-Code > Pause at Height.
Step 3: Filament Purge Procedure
When the printer pauses and beeps, pull back the base spool and insert your contrasting color. Ensure you purge until the extruded plastic runs 100% clean with no color bleed before resuming.
